Professional background:
For over twenty years I've spent my professional career as a classroom educator, private tutor and academic coach. It is my passion and I love what I do.
In 2019, I started Academic Ascent because I wanted to develop more meaningful partnerships with my students and their families that went beyond the classroom. I wanted to create an educational practice that focused on the "whole student", taking into account the factors abound that contribute to a student's success or failure in any academic endeavour, rather than focusing solely on subject material. A student's academic life is only the tip to the iceberg of their full selves, and I believed strongly that a student gains an upper hand when their educator understands who they are and how they learn. FIve years later, I still firmly believe in that principle and it continues to guide us today.
Prior to starting Academic Ascent, I was an educator at Oakwood School in Annandale, Virginia, where I came to deeply appreciate their small-classroom format and innovative ways to individualize instruction. Before that I taught at the acclaimed Hamilton Institute at Wheeler in Providence, Rhode Island and Sally Borden at Friends Academy in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, two schools recognized for their pioneering work with children having language-based learning differences. In 2003, I helped administer several large-scale educational programs in Palm Beach County, Florida resulting from the No Child Left Behind Act, a massive federal educational initiative that demanded detailed reporting and close oversight of educational progress for hundreds of underprivileged youth. I am a certified Academic Life Coach by Coach Training EDU.
